US extends' ship ban 'exemption for 90 days to address suppl

New York, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The US government announced on the 24th that President Trump has signed a document to extend the suspension of the Jones Act for 90 days.

White House Assistant Press Secretary Taylor Rogers said on social media that the suspension of the Jones Act would allow more supplies to reach US ports faster, helping to maintain the supply of critical energy products, industrial raw materials, and agricultural necessities.

According to the Jones Act passed in 1920, ships transporting goods between domestic ports in the United States must be made in the United States, registered in the United States, and fly the American flag; The majority ownership of the vessel must be held by American citizens and operated by American crew members. On March 18th of this year, the US government announced a 60 day suspension of the Jones Act and lifted shipping restrictions to domestic ports in order to curb the rise in oil prices caused by the actual closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

After the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on February 28th, shipping in the Strait of Hormuz was obstructed. As a result, retail fuel prices in the United States have significantly increased, and shortages in industrial raw materials, fertilizers, and other supplies have had a serious impact on manufacturing and agricultural production.
