DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi on Thursday met with members of the 35th Chinese medical team in Zanzibar, commending China's longstanding contribution to the archipelago's healthcare sector.

The meeting at the Zanzibar State House came as the medical team prepared to conclude its one-year medical assistance mission.

Mwinyi expressed profound gratitude for China's continuous dispatch of medical teams to Zanzibar since 1964, saying generations of Chinese doctors had traveled to the archipelago to provide medical services and help ease the suffering of local people.

Bao Zengtao, leader of the medical team, said that during its latest mission, the team completed a nine-month laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery training course, successfully training 13 local doctors in advanced surgical techniques. He added that the team also conducted 27 free medical outreach clinics with island-wide coverage, providing consultations, treatment, health education and medicines to local communities.

Bao thanked Mwinyi for receiving the team, saying the recognition was a great encouragement to its members and reflected the strong China-Zanzibar medical partnership.

Mwinyi presented honorary medals to members of the medical team and plaques of appreciation to the institutions that dispatched the doctors.
